New law banning use of mobile phones whilst driving
As of April 2022 it is now illegal to use your mobile phone whilst driving.
The government’s officially designated road safety campaign group THINK! has launched a it's latest road safety campaign to reduce the use of mobile phones whilst driving. The campaign targets young drivers and this coincides with increased motoring laws around mobile phone use whilst driving.
Drivers using a mobile phone are:
  • Slower at recognising and reacting to hazards.
  • 4 times more likely to be in a crash.
  • Reaction is 3 times slower if you text and drive

Hands on the wheel? Hands off your phone.
It is now illegal to drive and use a phone, including to take photos or videos, scroll through playlists or play games and will result in a fine of up to £1,000 upto 6 points on your driving licence, and could even lead to a total ban from driving.
The new THINK! campaign also aims to change the behaviour of drivers and passengers, whilst also making them aware of the dangers and the penalties for using their phones whilst driving.
However you should be aware there are a few scenrios where you can and this includes using your phone to make a contactless payment at a drive thru but only if your vehicle is stationary. Handsfree is still allowed whilst driving but only if your phone is secured in a phone holder sllowing the use of a phone as a  sat nav.
